The reason they’re so awful is that most people I can understand why. After all, if you’re a talented person, how hard can it be to throw together a resume? And your background speaks for itself. Right? Well, no. The truth is that you can be the greatest software engineer, accountant, salesperson or even marketing executive in the world, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into having what it takes to create a great resume that says what it needs to say and does what it needs to do. Resumes are not like other business documents. Resumes use their own kind of language and structure, and must convey very specific information. There are certain requirements and traditions that you can’t stray far from, and it must fit on two pages or less. You’re limited to text in standard fonts, and photos, graphics and color are pretty much no-no’s. The challenge is to respect the requirements but still deliver your story in a way that expresses your individuality. As you can tell, I’m passionate about resumes.
Because of my recruiting experience, I know what your competition’s resumes look like, which resume got the interview, and which ones didn’t. More important, I understand the psychology of resumes and how they communicate, even when you don’t know it. The words, the structure of sentences, the readability, the font, the order of information, there are many things that send a message, and that can be used to send the message you want. I also believe that everyone should be themselves, and that should shine through in your resume, so whoever reads it gets a sense of what you’re about as a person. That means I don’t use specific templates or ornate standardized layouts, and every resume I create is distinct and personal, tailored for you. Resume Service Options There are three resume service options, depending on how much work and revision your resume needs. I don’t subcontract out any part of this process, so you are getting my personal focused attention, no matter which level you choose. (That also means there may be times when I’m booked and turnaround is a little slower, but if that’s the case, I’ll let you know right away, and I’ll do my best to keep that from happening.)
The Resume Review is an honest and professional evaluation of your current resume. I’ll go over your resume with a fine-tooth comb, and will write a detailed critique that gives you all of my thoughts, observations and edits along with my detailed suggestions for how to make it better. I’ll tell you what’s working, and what’s working against you. I’ll tell you what I think is missing and what doesn’t need to be there. I’ll point out the typos and misspellings, and give you suggestions for formatting that will work best for what you’re aiming for. Then you incorporate the advice and suggestions in the report and make the changes to your document. This is for you if… you’re hungry for some honest professional feedback about your resume, and you want to know what your resume is really saying about you. It’s also great if you’re pretty sure your resume is good, but want another opinion. You’ll get… a detailed written summary resume review report of my evaluation of your resume, with specific suggestions for changes you can make to make it stronger and more focused on your target. The Resume Polish transforms a less-than-lovely or disorganized resume into a winner. I’ll use your existing resume for the information in it, or if you don’t have one, I’ll have you complete a data sheet with all the necessary details. Next I’ll do a full interview with you on the phone so I can really understand your career progression and get more specifics about your accomplishments, your talents, your work history and experience, and where you want to go next in your career. The goal is to get a really good sense of what you’re all about. Then I put it all back together in with a fresh new look and approach, in a made-for-you format and order that works best for your specific experience and focus.
